Management Approach

Environmental Policy

To manage the environmental aspects of its activity, CORTICEIRA AMORIM formalised an Environmental Policy, where it bears responsibility for:

  • Acting proactively identifying, evaluating and taking suitable preventive and corrective measures to minimise the specific environmental impact of its activity, using, whenever feasible, the best available technology;
  • Promoting awareness and environmental training initiatives;
  • Acting proactively in the discussion of policies and the proposal of measures to protect the cork oak, the preservation of the cork oak forest, the promotion of the cork sector, the certification of forest management systems and the remuneration of environmental services in the cork oak forest;
  • To achieve the commitments undertaken in the Environmental Policy, CORTICEIRA AMORIM's various Business Units (BU) have adopted certification in different management systems (see table).

The Fight Against Global Warming

Cork and the cork oak forest ecosystem play an important role in carbon fixing and consequently in the fight against global warming. According to the latest National Forest Inventory (published in 2010), cork oak forests are responsible for retaining 64 million tonnes of CO2 in Portugal.

The worldwide leadership of CORTICEIRA AMORIM in the cork sector translates into responsibility for ensuring a viable ecosystem which promotes the fight against global warming. The company's contribution in this matter includes the following guidelines:

  • Increasing knowledge about the environmental impact of cork products and the ecosystem they make viable;
  • Affirming cork solutions and the development of cork oak forests, as protectors of the ecosystem;
  • Promoting internal and external awareness-raising activities;
  • Continuously improving CORTICEIRA AMORIM's performance in terms of energy efficiency, with the resulting reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
